Iron is an essential constituent of the red blood corpuscles, where it is present in the form of hemoglobin. Anemia is a condition characterized by inadequate red blood cells or hemoglobin. Anemia is much more common among females than in males. Around 10% of girls have anemia at the age of 15, whilst in adult life the incidence is over 30% between ages of 30 and 40, around 20% at the age of 50 and around 30% at the age of 70 years.
Among males the incidence is under 5% until the age of 50 years, and it then rises to 20% at age of 70 years.
