Environmental Studies Centre
Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said had already visualized the importance of pollution free environment for the socio-economic progress of the country in 1970 when he warned the nation against the danger of environmental pollution due to excess percentage of lead in the air, filthy water and traffic noises. He deeply desired to establish an Institute for Environmental Science in Hamdard university to impart education of environmental sciences and to conduct researches on environmental issues. He did some paper work for it. He established Hydro Chemistry Laboratories at Madinat al-Hikmah with the help of his German friend and scientist, Prof. Dr. Juergen Hohnholz. The laboratory has been providing services of water analysis to more than 100 organizations and industrial units. A concrete step was taken towards the fulfilment of his vision on 20th September 2005 when Governor of Sindh, Dr. Ishratul Ibad Khan inaugurated the Environmental Studies Centre at Madinat al-Hikmah, Karachi. Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the Governor declared Madinat al-Hikmah – the Green House of Karachi. The Environmental Studies Centre, the first centre of its type, established in a private university in Pakistan, is envisaged as a revolutionary step in tertiary education — that is connecting students to their communities, and ecologies, and equipping them to be caring citizens and more. The Karachi City does not currently have a centre where people of all ages can go to find out about their local environment and their relationship with it. This centre shall support a wide range of valuable activities for the people of all ages and income brackets. The centre would be equipped with a green library and green directory that would allow it to perform the certain functions with regard to different environmental matters and issues e.g. waste management, leaf would techniques, energy conservation, solar water heating, rainwater re-use, and wildlife gardening etc. The centre would support community activities such as walking, cycle riding and social activities.
